We all probably clean-up our closets at least twice a year, but let's be honest––how often do these clear-outs include our undergarments drawer?
As women we have some everyday necessities in our wardrobe, this includes bras and underwear. These are pretty much necessary in our lives.
Bras and underwear can get to be pretty expensive though, so definitely everyone tries to hold on to the ones they’ve owned for as long as possible, but do you ever ask yourself, how often should you really be replacing your bras and underwear? And how often you should wash them..?
How Often I should wash?
When it comes to washing undergarments, it's a no-brainer that underwear should be washed after each use, but how often should a woman wash her bras? Once a week? Twice a month? Never?
Bras depend on a few factors, like how many bras you have in your rotation, how often you’re wearing them, in what conditions, and underneath of what.
The general rule should be to wash a bra after you've worn it several times, according to Lexie Sachs, senior product analyst in the Textiles Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute.
"It's very personal and really it depends on your activity level Or if you are somewhere really hot and humid, you want to wash it just as you would with another type of clothing you would wear, but if you aren’t sweating a lot and wearing for regular use you can do it every few wears," Sachs said.
However there is such a thing as too much washing and too little. There are downsides to both extremes: laundering your clothes more than you need to can shorten their lifespan and wear them out quickly, but washing too rarely can be unhygienic and cause bacteria growth.
How often I should replace?
When it comes to bras it is said that your bras should actually only last you about 6-12 months, sounds pretty crazy right? Usually after this amount of time, the straps tend to get really loose, the band around your chest becomes loose as well or worn down, and sometimes the under wiring becomes weak or even breaks/comes out of the bra. These are definitely significant signs you should replace your bras because it is important to give yourself the proper support that is necessary for proper breast health. Other causes to replace your bras can be weight loss or weight gain, there is damage to any area of your bra, or it is really just not fitting you properly.
As far as underwear goes, it is really recommend just replacing your underwear when necessary. Guess we all know that after a while our underwear does begin to wear out, the fabric becomes thinner, and sometimes even end up with tears or possibly even stains from that special time of the month.
I think you are able to make that call on your own and for sure you will know when to replace your underwear. Though wouldn't recommend waiting too long, you should probably replace your pairs at least once a year or so depending on the amount of usage that you get out of them.
Many of us are guilty of not replacing everyday items until they really can't be used. However it is important to replace these things as often as necessary so you have the support you need at all times.
