The most important component in a woman’s make-up kit is probably the lipstick. And when it comes to lipstick, we all know we can’t just have one. In fact, we will have few personal favorites!

No make-up kit is complete without lipstick as they definitely add additional beauty to your lips, however it does contain some unavoidable side-effects. Women wear lipstick when they leave home and continue wearing it all day long – sometimes even to bed. Such a practice is definitely not the healthiest.

Many lipsticks contain lead which is extremely harmful and causes irreversible health damage. It mainly affects the nervous system and harms the hormonal system. Lipsticks are known to cause allergy and irritation over the lips and the surrounding skin

We need to be aware of which lipsticks and lip-glosses we choose to use, and make a conscious effort to find the safest ones possible.

Below are the most common heavy metals found in lipsticks and lip-glosses according to studies

  • Chromium – a carcinogen, especially linked to tumors of the stomach.
  • Lead – medical experts agree, there are NO safe levels of lead. It is a potent neurotoxin and hormone disruptor.
  • Cadmium – a build up from accumulative exposure can damage the kidneys and cause fragile bones.
  • Manganese – while an essential nutrient we need, too much can cause Parkinson like symptoms.
  • Aluminum – a recognized neurotoxin, with no biological role to play inside the human body.

These metals cause allergy, irritation, and chapping on the lips and the surrounding skin. Certain harmful chemicals and heavy metals can also cause cancer. Here are some harmful side-effects of using lipsticks regularly.

  • Extremely high amounts of cadmium can increase the risk of renal failure. Frequent application of lipstick can cause severe stomach tumors.
  • Lead is a neurotoxin that has a harmful effect on the nervous system. It can also cause brain damage, hormonal imbalance and infertility.
  • Lead is a neurotoxin that has a harmful effect on the nervous system. It can also cause brain damage, hormonal imbalance and infertility.
  • The preservatives used in lipsticks are formaldehyde and parabens that are known carcinogens. Lipsticks that utilize these preservatives cause irritation of the eyes, coughing, wheezing and irritation on skin. The mineral oils used in lipsticks block the skin pores and are responsible for many permanent harmful effects.
  • Though bismuth oxychloride is a chemical used to preserve the lipstick, it is extremely harmful for the body. The harmful effect of lipsticks is due to the carcinogenic property of this ingredient. The propylparabens act as preservatives just like formaldehyde.
  • Lipsticks are worn most of the time, including when eating out. Women ingest them accidentally while eating, long after they are applied. This increases the impact of the toxins present in lipsticks.

These are the major side-effects caused by the harmful chemicals and heavy metals present in leading brands of lipsticks and lip gloss. And also Due to the number of times a woman reapplies her lipstick or gloss throughout the day, woman are often being exposed to well over the safe limits for heavy metals exposure. Remember, less is more when it comes to wearing highly pigmented lipsticks and lip-glosses.

Tip: Using lipstick every day can darken the lips quite a bit. To prevent this, use a small amount of glycerin before you apply lipstick. It will protect them not only from darkening, but also provide an added coat of moisture to help your lipstick glide on smoothly.

Now I am not advocating giving up lipstick altogether. I myself am guilty of lathering my lips sometimes. You do yours, and if lipstick gives you the confidence boost you need to get you through the day then so be it.It’s just most of us put on lipstick without ever considering what’s inside the tube. Thankfully there are some safer alternatives around out there for all you lippy lovers.  ILIA, Beautycounter, Nūdus, Ecco Bella are some organic brands of lipstick that’s just as good and non-toxic

So next time you wear your lipstick, make sure you wear one that does not contain harmful ingredients. And, do yourself a favor and remove your lipstick before sleeping so that you can let your lips breathe and recover, before you hide them behind your favorite lipstick the next day
