The rome-based flagship carrier of Italy, 'Alitalia' has begun it's direct operations to the Maldives on 1st November 2017.
In order to inaugurate the direct scheduled services by Italy's national carrier, a special ceremony was held at Velana International Airport on 1st November, with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Alitalia’s local agent Voyages Maldives in attendance.
Addressing the ceremony, Managing Director of Voyages Maldives Solah Shihab stated that Alitalia's scheduled services to the Maldives will increase the number of tourist arrivals from Italy, as well as the entire region of Europe.
Alitalia will be operating weekly flights on a 25-seater Airbus A330, to Velana International Airport for the winter season, until 24th March 2018.
The flight will depart directly from Rome every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday at 21:45 (local time) and will land in Maldives at 11:05 (local time) on the following day. Whereas the return flight will depart every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 13:10 (local time) and will land in Rome at 19:30 (local time).
Additional international airlines are expected to increase flights and capacity in the coming months, for the winter season also known as the peak tourist season in the Maldives.
