Arrested Jumhoory Party’s leader and Maamigili constitution MP Qasim Ibrahim’s lawyers on Friday have stated that there is no evidence to back the allegations against Qasim.
During the press conference, Qasim’s lawyer Hisaan Hussain stated that the police had submitted a mere intelligence report as evidence to the claims against Qasim. Hisaan also went onto declare that the current constitution of Maldives does not allow the detention of a suspect during the investigative process.
Lawyer Hisaan also highlighted that the court order which was used to detain Qasim stated that Qasim is to be kept in custody to prevent him from tampering with any evidence. However, Hisaan remarked that one cannot tamper with evidence which does not exist, referring to the intelligence report which was the only supporting evidence presented against Qasim.
Qasim’s lawyers had also requested to transfer Qasim to house arrest due to his health conditions, however the judge had only ordered the police to keep him in a well-ventilated place.
Qasim’s legal team is undergoing the necessary preparations to appeal to the High Court as soon as the appeal court resumes.
